Adapted from the McKenna stories by Mary Casanova, this latest title from the American Girl franchise is based on the 2012 Doll of the Year. Elementary school-aged protagonist McKenna Brooks (Jade Pettyjohn) is super-hyped about practicing gymnastics to earn a spot for the upcoming competitive team challenge, but doesn't listen to the advice of her coach (Olympian-turned-actress Cathy Rigby), who cautions her to be patient about attempting a particularly advanced backspring move. McKenna—much given to rolling her eyes—also seems to have a tough time listening to her parents (Nia Vardalos and Ian Ziering) about her declining grades…until she is caught cheating off another student (for which she is barely punished, at least onscreen). The challenges McKenna faces while recovering from a serious sports injury are at the center of the story, which also features her relationship ups and downs with a longtime gymnast pal whose mother puts a lot of pressure on winning, and with a new tutor in a wheelchair who teaches McKenna about reading and friendship. Presented in a Blu-ray/DVD Combo package with a bonus digital copy, McKenna Shoots for the Stars features plenty of fast-paced gym routines along with a bouncy grrrl-power pop soundtrack. A strong optional purchase. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)
