Puffer the Puffin learns the basics of ceramics from his friend Polly at her studio in this upbeat animated program from the Dropping in on… art series. The curious avian reporter learns how to make simple pots with coils and slabs, while Polly also introduces basic techniques for achieving different effects using varied clays and glazes, as well as making impressions with knives and other tools. Terminology such as “kiln,” “wheel-thrown,” and “pottery wheel” are explained along the way, and viewers are encouraged to be creative, with multiple options offered for each lesson. Interspersed throughout the animated instructional sequences are photographs of finished pottery by both prominent artists and young students. Puffer also learns how clay itself is formed in nature, and about its different uses around the world and throughout time. The animation has a striking retro look, with simple backgrounds and vivid colors that should appeal to a young audience. A supplementary booklet includes vocabulary, photos, discussion questions, and suggested classroom activities. Recommended. Aud: E, I, P. (K. Cruver)
