This first volume from the Smithsonian Networks SciQ science and technology series for younger viewers features four episodes featuring teen hosts Paula, Andrew, and Pemma. “CSI” includes a trip to crime scene investigation school and explores different types of training, as well as important elements of the job such as careful examination and forming hypotheses. The hosts also get to lift fingerprints, watch the process as DNA is separated from saliva, see a police dog at work, and test out their newfound knowledge in a simulated crime scene. Also included here are the episodes “Spies,” “Sound” (featuring members of the Blue Man Group), and “Movie Magic,” with the last delving into everything from using corn starch for fake blood to the work of the foley artist. Produced in HD, this cool series combines fun facts, relevant onscreen vocabulary, and nifty graphics and illustrations to create an entertaining and educational package. Highly recommended.
