Originally designed for after-school language programs, these two volumes—developed by a Cuban-American artist and Spanish language teacher—offer a fun, creative way for kids to practice their Español. Each volume features eight catchy, original songs sung in Spanish, using Latin musical styles such as cumbia and ranchero. The format is the same for each: a simple verse and chorus is sung, after which vocabulary words with correct pronunciation appear onscreen paired with appropriate images. For example, in the song “Del Jardín (From the Garden),” which is all about food, following the refrain of “Qué sabrosa, sabrosa es la comida (How delicious, delicious is the food),” the terms for everything from apples and oranges to milk and cereal are presented. The first volume, aimed at beginners, covers topics such as animals, household items, and body parts, while the second begins with a review of the earlier lessons before branching out into additional categories, such as family members, occupations, and transportation. Because the target audience may be preliterate, lyrics are not shown onscreen, but the DVDs licensed for educational use feature accompanying curriculum, including song lyrics in both English and Spanish, and vocabulary lists.
