Melissa Zafarana teaches this first volume in an art instructional series based on techniques developed by artist and educator Larry Gluck. Following an introduction listing necessary tools (watercolor paper, various brushes, a cup of water, a palette for mixing, etc.), the program is divided into seven lessons (despite the cover art's claim of six). Covering topics ranging from the angle of the easel board to testing the paint and color levels, The Art of Watercolor for Kids incorporates various vocabulary words (such as “channeling” the paint), while offering tips on washing around or within a shape (using the tip of the brush for clean lines), softening edges, and laying one wash over another. Also featuring a “Blue Box Drill” training exercise, the program presents step-by-step instruction, using a camera angle that overlooks Zafarana's demonstrations, making it well-suited for young beginners. Recommended. [Note: Also available separately are Parts 2, 3, and 4, or all four in a set priced at $59.95.] Aud: E, I, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
