In this adaptation of Brenda Maier’s picture-book debut inspired by the nineteenth-century nursery classic Little Red Hen, spunky Ruby finds some old boards and decides to build a fort. She elicits help from her brothers Oscar Lee, Rodrigo, and José who turn down all her requests, beginning with “Who will help me build something?” Each time she invites help, the brothers respond with such negative answers as “No way,” “Not me,” “I don’t think so,” and “I’m too busy.”
Undaunted, she forges ahead by drawing plans, gathering materials, and building a fort with some adult help. Finally, when the fort is completed and the brothers want to join in the fun, she turns the tables and quickly says, “Not so fast, I’m going to play by myself.” The guys huddle together and get busy making a mailbox, planting flowers, and painting the fort fire engine red. Sonia Sánchez’ colorful mixed-media illustrations are panned by the camera against a backdrop of composer Scotty Huff’s bouncy background music, simple sound effects (hammering nails and laughter among others), and Frankie Corzo’s clear narration.
Although based on the beloved Little Red Hen story, knowledge of the fable is unnecessary for youngsters (K-Grade 2) to enjoy this simple tale that has a happy ending with all the siblings playing together in the fort. Perfect for public library and school story times and family home entertainment. Girl power! Highly Recommended.
