“Ask yourself where it is you want to go….” advises the preface to this animated adaptation of the 10th anniversary edition of Peter H. Reynolds' 1997 picture book. Narrated by Tim Curry, The North Star follows a rosy-cheeked outdoorsy baby who initially crawls on all fours, but later learns to dance and run. “He wasn't afraid of much,” we're told, as the child follows a rabbit down a path while a purring cat talks to him about beginning his journey. When the ground turns swampy, a bird counsels the young traveler to look up and appreciate the bright, guiding stars that will light his new direction. Along the way, the boy meets a frog who can't see the stars but is satisfied with his bog home, after which the lad comes to the realization that all of us embark on a different journey, with varying signs and stops unique to each. Backed by a majestic soundtrack by Tony Lechner, this inspirational allegorical tale reminds viewers young and old that “You're not the only one on this journey…plenty ahead of you, lots to follow.” DVD extras include audio commentary by Reynolds, an interview with the author, and a read-along option. Highly recommended. Aud: K, E, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
