The recent revival of interest in storytelling and the increasing demand for signed or captioned videos for the hearing-impaired make this series of tapes doubly useful. Each tape contains a fable or folktale performed in pantomime and sign language by actor Billy Seago, and voiced by T. R. Hinkey. Seago, who is deaf and a former member of the National Theatre of the Deaf, is a gifted performer. His fluid use of sign language, expressive face, skill in pantomime and pleasant manner, make each story unique and entertaining. Hinkey's narration fits so well with Seago's appearance and gestures, that it is often difficult to remember that two performers are involved. The stories, which are aimed at elementary school children, are lively and humorous, and can also be enjoyed by families and older groups. A brief lesson in vocabulary and signing is included on each tape, which encourages viewer participation and repeated showings. The series includes: The Father, the Son, and the Donkey; The Greedy Cat; The House That Jack Built; The Magic Pot, and Village Stew. Each story is available w/narration and a choice of Signed English or American Sign Language, or Signed English w/narration and open captions. Highly recommended for public libraries, schools, and any group that works with the deaf. (Available from: Sign-A-Vision Inc., P.O. Box 30580, Seattle, WA 98103-0580).
