Writer-director Nisha Ganatra also stars in her ultra-low-budget feature film debut as Reena, an Indian photographer and henna tattoo artist living in Brooklyn who offers to carry a child for her infertile sister. Reena's lesbian squeeze isn't exactly thrilled by the idea, while her tradition-bound mother hopes the pregnancy will somehow set her straight. Ganatra manages to get in swipes at bisexuals, political correctness, and other easy targets, but her direction is kind of listless and her character development a bit underdone. While offering a worthwhile attempt to examine changing social and cultural roles, Chutney Popcorn ultimately leaves too many of its kernels unpopped. Definitely optional. (T. Rich)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
