Produced and directed by famous schlock-movie showman William Castle (The Tingler), this campy 1960 movie (recently remade) about an inherited haunted house used a gimmick dubbed “Illusion-O” to lure theatergoers to its cheesy thrills. Included with the double-sided DVD (one side shows the effect, the other doesn't) is a “ghost viewer”--a double-strip of red and blue film--that allowed innocent audiences of a bygone era to choose to see the numerous titular apparitions or (as if!) opt not to. Full of hoary horror-film clichés, this scarcely scary film does offer some silly fun, such as the casting of Margaret Hamilton (The Wizard of Oz) as a bewitching housekeeper. Extras include the featurette "The Making of Illusion-O." Horror best suited for family viewing, this is definitely optional. (T. Rich)
