The 70s and 80s were an enormous cornucopia of low-budget, high-action, (and, for the most part) poorly-executed action exploitation schlock. For every Schwarzenegger or Stallone hit, there were hundreds of cheaply made imitations. However, there are some true diamonds in the rough among these imitations. Lesser-known films in this genre can provide hours of entertainment.
Directed by John Stewart (no, not that one, a stuntman), this 1989 flick is—to be quite frank—high on action. Carmen (Barri Murphy) witnesses the murder of her boyfriend. She is also chased by the murderers across town, before the boyfriend’s death. After she is put into the protection of two FBI agents, the action truly gets going and doesn’t stop.
Car crashes. Explosions. Gunfights. This movie has all of them. Stewart clearly learned the standbys as a stuntman, and the film delivers on all cylinders. Well, in terms of the action at least. If you can forgive very 2-dimensional characters, and bouts of painful dialogue, this is definitely the flick for you. What it lacks in meaningful character development it more than makes up for in car crashes, explosions, fight scenes, and other action movie staples. Highly recommended.
