Produced in 1984, this American Playhouse production of the popular Tennessee Williams play provides a formidable showcase for Jessica Lange, who cuts a beguiling figure as lusty Maggie; Rip Torn, who just about tears up the set as egomaniacal Big Daddy; and Kim Stanley, who received a well-deserved Emmy as Big Daddy's put-upon wife. Only the usually terrific Tommy Lee Jones seems miscast as Maggie's impotent hubby, who's in doubt over his sexuality. Filmed as a play rather than a movie, this otherwise decent production comes off a bit artificial on the screen. Still, considering the source material, mostly stellar perfs, and sell-through price, this is a strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
