Based on an Agatha Christie novel, "Endless Night" ultimately proves a smug cheat, deflecting from its secrets until it's time to cheerfully pull the rug out from under viewers who thought they were watching a coherent story. Hywel Bennet stars as Michael, a gig worker whose brief employment as a gas station attendant and chauffeur speak to his restlessness and lack of focus. When he comes upon a beautiful parcel of land for sale in the English countryside, he seems to become a magnet for good and bad magic. By chance, he befriends a dying architect who wants to build a mansion on the grounds---if Michael can somehow buy it. That problem is solved when Michael meets an ethereal American heiress, Ellie (Hayley Mills), when she pops up on the property. Marrying Ellie and enduring the scorn of her family, who regard him as a golddigger, Michael soon finds he has to share his new bride with a constant throng of people who always seem to be around. Ratcheting up his exasperation is the recurring figure of a witchy woman whose family name is Townsend, and who suggests dark forces afoot. None of this ultimately matters, however, as co-screenwriter and director Sidney Gilliat are going to change all the rules of this game before closing credits. Lightly recommended.
