John Boorman's magnificent and magical 1981 epic reinterpreting the legends of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table presents the grand British myth at its most elemental—romantic and tragic, human and supernatural, set on the cusp between the old gods and early Christianity. Every frame brings to mind the ancient world of wonder and primeval power—even the Christian wedding of Arthur (Nigel Terry) and Guenevere (Cherie Lunghi), set in the midst of a forest, plays like an earthy pagan ceremony. Excalibur is also a magnificent blood-and-thunder tale of men with swords torn between primal drives (lust and power) and benevolent monarch Arthur's idealism, encouraging his knights to go forth in acts of heroism and chivalry. Both of these warring impulses center in the character of Lancelot (Nicholas Clay), a paragon of goodness with an eye on the queen. Nicol Williamson dominates the strong supporting cast (which also includes Helen Mirren as Morgana) as the cagey Merlin, ancient sage and court sorcerer, who tries to guide the fumbling mortals out of the dark ages. Nicely preserving the film's rich, grainy look, this Blu-ray debut features director Boorman's commentary from a previous DVD release. Offering the most resonant cinematic take on the Arthurian legends, this is highly recommended. (S. Axmaker)
