Director Mervyn LeRoy's 1962 musical offers the definitive stage mom tale with Rosalind Russell stopping at nothing to insure that her two daughters, "Dainty" June (Anne Jillian) and Louise (Natalie Wood), become stars, even if it means turning the latter into a burlesque queen. Russell, playing to the cheap seats, gives a performance so grating that it's almost unwatchable, which is a pity because Karl Malden, as Russell's love interest, and Wood both shine. Featuring a very good video transfer, a classic score and memorable tunes, this is still a strong, optional purchase. (S. C. Sickles)
