Comic Martin Short is well cast as a hypochondriac who really has something to complain about when he's accidentally injected with--follow me closely here--a miniaturized bathysphere containing an (admittedly teensy-weensy) alcoholic Navy pilot (Dennis Quaid). With incompetent bad guys in hot pursuit of the micro-sub, plenty of family-friendly sophomoric comedic situations ensue. Executive produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante (Gremlins), this 1987 lite variation on Fantastic Voyage sports an excellent DVD transfer (showcasing the Oscar-winning special effects), as well as a commentary by Dante, visual effects supervisor Dennis Muren, producer Michael Finnell and co-stars Kevin McCarthy and Robert Picardo. A silly but often entertaining piece of fluff, this is a strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
