James Spader delivers a dynamite dual performance in this twisty thriller that has more turns than Peggy Fleming on ice. On the 100th anniversary of each of the prostitute's deaths at the hands of the original Jack the Ripper, a present-day reenactment is taking place in Los Angeles. Initially, it looks as if Spader, a quiet young doctor, is the culprit. But then he dies. Then it looks like it might be his hyper, tough-talking brother who was a medic in the service (also played by Spader). And then... Although the plot may sound a bit ghoulish and unsavory, the film is not very violent. It's the brains, not bodies, that get battered in this psychological thriller that will have you guessing right up to the final scene. A superb entree for neophyte writer/director Rowdy Herrington.
