Stars: Crispin Glover (Back To The Future, River's Edge), Tatum O'Neal (Little Darlings, Paper Moon), Rik Mayall (Drop Dead Fred). The idea of Crispin Glover and Tatum O'Neal onscreen at the same time should be enough to make most filmgoers cringe, but the offbeat Glover actually turns in one of his best performances as Joey, an aspiring novelist who's never written anything. Along with his actor-mime-juggler roommate Timmy, Joey continually hits up the only agent he knows for advances. Eventually, Joey acquires a notebook of poems from a mentally troubled mute and takes them to the agent--claiming the poems are his own work. Mild success and prosperity follow before guilt sets in, and Joey goes searching for his long lost mute friend. Writer/director Jane Spencer shows promise with this oddball entry, which won't attract mainstream audiences but may find a home with devotees of off the beaten track comedies. O'Neal, who plays Glover's playwright friend, is only onscreen in a handful of scenes and leaves no significant impression one way or the other. Audience: People who like Crispin Glover's loopy performances, or just those looking for something different.
