While it doesn't exactly belong on the list of James Stewart's most beloved classics, Magic Town still holds up as a charming, slightly satirical rom-com with a socially conscious message. Screenwriter and producer Robert Riskin had written some of Capra's best films (including It Happened One Night, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town and Meet John Doe), and he hired William A. Wellman to direct. Wellman, a seasoned veteran better known for Westerns, dramas, and war movies, was not exactly an obvious choice to handle Riskin's brand of upscale comedy, but he brought a light touch to the proceedings, thanks in large part to the easygoing chemistry between Stewart and costar Jane Wyman. Stewart plays Rip Smith, a savvy pollster who is quickly going broke. When Rip discovers that the citizens of the all-American town of Grandview provide a 100% accurate reflection of American opinions at large, he recruits two colleagues to join him in gathering poll data while posing as insurance salesmen. Rip is quickly adopted by the townsfolk as a trustworthy citizen, but when he romances the highly principled newspaper editor (Wyman), the latter quickly grows wise to his scheme. Bowing on Blu-ray, with a clean and crisp transfer, this engaging comedy is recommended. (J. Shannon)
