Baseball has Bull Durham. Golf has Caddyshack. And hockey--for better or worse--has Slap Shot, the earthy, profane 1977 comedy that reunited Paul Newman with his Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid director George Roy Hill. Newman stars as the over-the-hill coach of the Charlestown Chiefs, a hopeless factory town hockey team on thin ice (they're a bust in the standings and at the box office). Enter the Hanson brothers (Jeff and Steve Carlson, and Dave Hanson), three goons whose outrageous behavior on the ice transforms the team. But at what price? Slap Shot: 25th Anniversary Edition on DVD scores with the film's original soundtrack (rights hassles hampered the original VHS release) and sports an entertaining commentary track by the Hanson "brothers." Recommended. (K. Lee Benson)
