This cult sitcom about a misfit study group of eccentric students at a dysfunctional community college enjoyed a passionate but small audience on network TV and was cancelled after five seasons. Deciding to compete with Netflix, Amazon, and Hulu in the streaming video marketplace, Yahoo! revived the show for what would be its final season. With three members of the original cast gone and Jeff Winger (Joel McHale) now serving on the faculty, the study group has morphed into the "Save Greendale Committee," with two new members added for the season: Francesca “Frankie” Dart (Paget Brewster), a new administrator hired to get the college's finances in order, and Elroy Patashnik (Keith David), an inventor who saves Dean Pelton (Jim Rash) from a virtual reality addiction. The group is filled out with returning characters Britta (Gillian Jacobs), Abed (Danny Pudi), Annie (Alison Brie), and Ben (Ken Jeong). The series continues here to maintain the self-aware humor that made its reputation, with Abed providing commentary on the sitcom conventions it spoofs (cue montage sequence), and the episode "Grifting 101" modeling itself on the movie The Sting, right down to the ragtime piano version of the show's theme song. But while often clever, inventive, and funny, this final season never quite recaptures the chemistry of the series in its prime. Still, fans will be glad to have this one last visit with the characters. Presenting all 13 episodes from the 2015 sixth season, extras include a behind-the-scenes featurette, deleted scenes, trivia, and a gag reel. A strong optional purchase. (S. Axmaker)
