A quick flop at the boxoffice, this lovely father and son film (with a twist) was a pleasant surprise. Martin Sheen is Charlie, a New York writer, who flies back to his native Ireland to attend his "da's" (Barnard Hughes) funeral. The twist: Charlie's da, though dead, comes back to the house to babble, scold, and occasionally even speak directly to his exasperated son. Past, present, and future are collapsed-leading to one of the most interesting scenes in recent cinematic history. The boys have lunch together: Charlie, his dead father, and Charlie as a teenager (who is rather disappointed in what he's grown up to become.) A fiercely original film, and one which deserves a much longer life on video.
