Narrated by Oscar nominee Annette Bening, 14 Women—directed by filmmaker Mary Lambert (Pet Sematary), sister of Senator Blanche Lincoln (D-Arkansas)—is an informative, if somewhat unfocused profile of the 14 women (up from two in 1992) who were serving in the U.S. Senate circa 2007. The subjects begin by talking about their inspirations and defining moments before moving on to political campaigns and day-to-day responsibilities. Senior Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Michigan) explains how she developed a passion for service from her grocer father, which resulted in a career in social work, which in turn led to politics, i.e. “social work with power.” Olympia Snowe (D-Maine) ran for her husband's seat after his death, and has held it for three terms. Former First Lady Hillary Clinton (D-New York) praises Eleanor Roosevelt and reminds viewers, “You don't have to be an officeholder or even run for office to be part of the political process.” Throughout, Lambert interweaves comments from colleagues, including newly-minted Vice President Joe Biden (D-Delaware), with those of school-age girls who offer their thoughts. In addition, the film looks back at former senators, such as Carole Moseley Braun (D-Illinois). Granted, more female senators may be Democrat than Republican, but 14 Women proves that a documentary can be feminist and non-partisan at the same time, allowing everyone their say, including Elizabeth Dole (R-North Carolina). Although the presentation is a bit scattershot, this inspiring film is recommended, overall. Aud: H, C, P. (K. Fennessy)
