The success of The Three Tenors has spawned a multitude of imitators, including 3 Mo' Divas (who are actually a third-generation example, spun off from an earlier venture titled Three Mo' Tenors). Essentially an extravagant and fun nightclub routine, the singers here are sopranos Nova Y. Payton and Jamet Pittman and mezzo Laurice Lanier, who possess voices and personalities that fill the stage. All are classically trained, but unlike many opera stars who seem stilted and uncomfortable when singing more popular pieces, this trio can confidently deliver material in a wide variety of styles, from Puccini arias (“Quando M'en Vo”) and Broadway hit tunes (“Seasons of Love” from Rent, “Defying Gravity” from Wicked), to jazz standards (“God Bless the Child”) and gospel hymns (“His Eye Is on the Sparrow”). Presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, most of 3 Mo' Divas is comprised of a live performance filmed at the Denver Center Theatre (offering a good mix of individual and group pieces, backed by accomplished choreography), along with occasional bits of backstage and rehearsal footage. DVD/Blu-ray extras include eight additional songs and text bios of the singers. 3 Mo' Divas may be the latest entry in an increasingly hackneyed theme, but it also features three extraordinarily talented women giving very spirited performances, making for an exuberant and enjoyable hour.
