Why would someone want to risk life and limb for an eight-second ride on the back of an ill-tempered bull? Hosted by Bo Derek, filmmaker Steven Dieveney's documentary Adrenaline Cowboys never quite answers that question, but it does offer a wonderful glimpse into the lives of the top bull riders on the contemporary rodeo circuit. The focus is on newcomer Mike Lee, who quickly grasps the intricacies of bull riding and finds himself competing against the likes of champions Tuff Hedeman and Adriano Moraes. Lee's rising star is mirrored with the retirement of Ty Murray, proclaimed as the "King of the Cowboys" by his peers. But the real star of the film is Bodacious, a romping-stomping bull who is never happy to have folks on his back. Rodeo fans will experience their own adrenaline rush watching their favorite stars up close and learning about their physical and mental preparation, while those new to the sport can't help but get caught up in the spirit of the competition and in the sheer athleticism of the bull riders hanging on for dear life. DVD extras include bonus footage, deleted scenes, and a featurette on bull rider Mike White. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (P. Hall)
