When terrorism struck New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001, the president was in the sky aboard the “flying White House.” This pre-9/11 National Geographic documentary offers a loving look at an American institution that is as much of a national symbol as a practical means of transportation for the country's chief executive. The 747 Jumbo Jet (there are actually two identical planes) carries not only the president and his entourage, but the presidential motorcade and enough firepower to protect the president (from classified weaponry designed to avoid missiles and repel the effects of a nuclear blast to regular ol' guns and ammo). Air Force One, which is technically any military aircraft the president is on at the time, is also practical as a political tool--giving rides is an especially powerful lobbying tool for influential members of congress. Interviewees include presidents Carter, Bush (senior and junior), and Clinton, who reminisce about their time as the commander-in-chief (in the case of George W., his comments on taking refuge in the plane turned out to be prophetic). While the plane may belong to the president for four or eight years, it's clear that there is a stronger attachment for the staff--the flight attendants, pilots, and maintenance crew who not only keep the mechanical condition of the craft in top shape, but also polish every square inch of the massive 747.
