Excerpted from his popular appearances on the college campus circuit, An Evening with Kevin Smith features the indie-film favorite cutting loose with lots of witty repartee in question-and-answer sessions with audiences that are more or less eating out of his hand. Self-deprecating remarks about his less-than-svelte shape and patchy romantic success are interspersed with often casually profane patter and salacious anecdotes. Oh, and he does talk about his movies, too, including both in front (as Silent Bob) and behind the lens (Clerks, Dogma). As formatted productions of this kind go, this is pretty well done--with reaction shots of the audience and interview footage with fans providing a welcome respite from the stage-bound shots. Given its considerable length (nearly four hours!), however, this Smith schtick is apt to wear thin for all but his most avid fans. A strong optional purchase. (T. Rich)
