Since Alvin Ailey's untimely death in 1989, his American Dance Theater has continued to thrive under the aegis of his protégé, Judith Jamison, sending dancers on tour to cities throughout the U.S. and abroad, while also being among the few performing arts organizations to claim financial and popular success. This 1986 Danish studio production provides the rare opportunity to see the troupe performing under the founder's leadership. Viewers will be entertained by the reminiscences of Ailey and Jamison as they take turns introducing four selections from the repertoire: “Divining,” choreographed by Jamison in celebration of a strong female leader; “Revelations,” Ailey's homage to faith and religious traditions (still the company's signature piece); “Stack-up,” Talley Beatty's depiction of Harlem life (with striking sets by Romare Bearden); and “Cry,” Ailey's birthday tribute to his mother, evoking the struggles of black women. Accompanying music is provided by various noteworthy artists, including Laura Nyro, Alice Coltrane, and Earth, Wind & Fire. Presented in PCM stereo, this is a must for Ailey fans and highly recommended for general collections as well. Aud: C, P. (J. Reed)
