A sobering examination of school violence, Any School, Any Time focuses specifically on Wisconsin's Green Bay East High School, where in September 2006 a brave teen (known here only as Matt) heard some friends' rumblings about a Columbine-style attack and went to school officials with his concerns. It's lucky he did: subsequent searches of the accused trio's homes turned up various weapons, explosives, and disturbing doodles, which revealed that the fear of impending violence was not unsubstantiated. Exploring the story from different viewpoints, the filmmakers include interviews with school administrators, city officials, and students; news clips; and even footage of the would-be attackers being interrogated. Any School, Any Time discusses practical issues, such as family plans, and offers a chilling look at a mock lockdown drill. The film also tackles more psychological, sociological, and philosophical issues, such as how much does media violence influence this type of behavior? Is there any sort of pattern that's a reliable predictor of dangerous behavior? How cautious is too cautious? And is there a danger that kids will be stereotyped? A timely film sure to spur discussion, this is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Williams-Wood)
