Combining an exploration of the life of St. Francis with a tour of his hometown of Assisi, Italy, Assisi, Home of St. Francis is aimed at both travel buffs and history aficionados. Born in the late 12th century, the son of a rich merchant, Francis was raised as a young nobleman, but after growing tired of a life he considered frivolous, he renounced his wealth as a young man and turned to prayer and service to the poor. Later in life, he received the stigmata (blessed wounds similar to those suffered by Christ while on the cross), and composed his famous poem, "The Canticle of Brother Sun." Two years after his death in 1226, Francis was canonized by Pope Gregory IX. Although the focus here is on a Catholic saint, non-Catholic viewers will also appreciate the coverage of Assisi's annual spring rituals, which include singing and crossbow competitions. Sporting excellent cinematography that nicely captures the beautiful scenery, this handsome production will appeal to a wide range of viewers. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Fisher)
