This documentary, covering the 1st International Festival of Percussion, shot by filmmakers Marc Huraux and Francois Migeat, and featuring Na Na Vasconcelos, could have been a great film. It features the drumming of some of the best African-style percussionists in the world. It is also interspersed with interviews, and therein lies the flaw. They're all in French. A few hundred dollars to a translator and a couple of hours on an Amiga graphics generator to key in subtitles would change its rating from Not Recommended to Highly Recommended. As it stands, it's only suitable for musicians or ethnic studies classes. (Elliott Swanson, Kitsap Regional Library, Bremerton, WA) (See ART BLAKEY: THE JAZZ MESSENGER for availability.)
