One thinker that often does not receive the credit they deserve is Simone de Beauvoir. Not only did she contribute a lot to existentialism, but she was also integral in the early development of feminism. de Beauvoir is an integral figure in Bellatrix: The Awakening of Feminism.
The central figure is Brazilian student Laura (Elisa Heidrich), who starts questioning what de Beauvoir’s “Second Sex” idea truly means. She discusses feminist ideals with politicians, academics, and walks the city streets while raising questions about gender and feminine identity.
We as the audience travel through these streets as Laura grapples with these various ideas. The imagery used throughout is effective, as at one point we see drawings develop like photos in a darkroom, similar to how Laura’s ideas are developing and forming over time. Performance pieces act as physical guides for some of the more cerebral ideas Laura grapples with. As Laura walks various streets, we the viewer feel as if we are taking the journey with her.
The film raises various points about womanhood, violence, misogyny, identity, and much more. Some viewers may feel as if the professionals consulted could have delved more into these topics, yet the film raises various points that will leave viewers satisfied and curious to read more. This educational documentary would make the perfect addition to your women's studies collection or syllabus.
