Opponents call it murder, while supporters claim it's a women's health issue. Eschewing the controversy over abortion, however, Beyond Regret instead focuses on the unresolved feelings of guilt, shame and grief that many women and men experience in the aftermath. Even though women who have had abortions are not allowed to publicly grieve in our society ("you made your decision, now live with it" is a common attitude), few can walk away without feeling an emotional or physical impact. Some women experience eating disorders or sexual problems, others turn to substance abuse or become workaholics, while still others exhibit frequent bouts of sadness, mistrust, low self-esteem, or even unexplained rage. Opening with several case studies of women (and men) who were surprised to find old wounds reopening at unexpected times (including one woman who had an abortion following a rape, but didn't tie her ongoing depression to a decision made in her youth until 35 years later), this program is very much Christian-based, relying heavily on scripture and trust in God. But--importantly--Beyond Regret does not pass judgment, choosing instead to offer up practical tips for healing, as well as suggestions for self-forgiveness and mourning. An enclosed booklet summarizes these steps, and provides a full list of resources for further help and guidance. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (J. Asala)
