Far from being a simplistic cautionary documentary about the crusade against steroid use among American athletes, Chris Bell's Bigger, Stronger, Faster* is a complex and even engaging film that raises serious questions. Narrated by Bell--a former WWE employee and bodybuilder who admits to having used steroids in the past (but now limits himself to legal supplements)--the film thoroughly covers the issue, combining archival footage and interviews with medical experts, activists, politicians, and some of the best-known sports figures who've been caught up in “performance-enhancing” drug scandals over the years. What's remarkable is Bell's evenhanded approach, giving ample time to those who describe steroids as a threat to the integrity of sport, as well as those who argue that the alarmist position is an exaggeration—all presented with visual flair, a bunch of pop cultural and political references, and a healthy dose of humor. Still, Bigger, Stronger, Faster* is no joke—it's often playful, but poignant too, especially when dealing with Bell's two brothers, who are admitted steroid users. And it places the issue within a broader cultural context, asking whether it isn't hypocritical to condemn steroids while emphasizing the importance of winning, whatever the cost. Highly recommended. [Note: DVD extras include 40 minutes of deleted scenes, a three-minute behind-the-scenes featurette, and trailers. Bottom line: a decent extras package for a fine documentary.] (F. Swietek)
