Being a 'recovering carnivore'--and I am not making that term up--I was a little nervous about watching an entire video devoted to that perfect little 4-basic-food-group-all-in-one--the hamburger. And though the front of my shirt got wet with drool, I made it. I'm okay, I love sprouts, and tofu is my friend. Combining interviews with Burger-stand aficionados like Richard MacDonald, founder of guess what, and others, along with archival footage, and vintage TV commercials, viewers are treated to the history of the fast food, car hoppin' drive-ins of yore. Beginning back in the '50s and '60s--focusing primarily in Southern California--we learn that this hamburger thing is not just a greasy bun with everything on it, it's part of our culture and part of the ritual of being American. Recommended. (N. Plympton)
