Gary Merill narrates this exciting true-life-adventure of how concerned members of the state of Maine banded together to bring caribou, once indigenous to the region, back home. The woodland caribou, once extending as far south as New Jersey, was last sighted in Maine in 1908. An earlier transport attempt in 1963 having failed, the Maine Caribou Transplant Project got underway again in 1986, and brought some 27 caribou on a hazardous overland journey from Newfoundland. Although a few were lost in the transit, the majority were met by a record turnout of 3,500 people in Maine. In addition to the story of the transplant, the filmmakers have included a lot of basic information about caribou history, diet, and living habits. The film concludes on an upbeat note: in May 1987, some dozen does gave birth. Recommended. (Available from: Alymer Press, P. 0. Box 2735, Madison, WI 53701.)
