Recorded live at Kan-I-Hoken Hall in Tokyo on April 15, 1986, Carmen McRae Live is a nicely done production of that legendary lady's soulful blues tunes. Among the 21 selections packed into this concert are such standouts as "That Old Black Magic," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do," "That Old Devil Called Love" (with Carmen on piano), and the love theme from Barbra Streisand's A Star is Born. Excellent backing music, and crisp Hi-Fi Stereo sound make this a fine choice for music collections. Lee Ritenour & Dave Grusin Live From the Record Plant features a jazz powerhouse of performers. In addition to the title players, studio greats Larry Williams, Carlos Vega, Abraham Laboriel, and Ivan Lins are on hand to help out. Grusin takes center stage on piano with his well-known "Mountain Dance" and the theme from "St. Elsewhere," while Ritenour struts his stuff on guitar with his "Harlequin" (with wonderful vocals by Ivan Lin) and the moody "Dolphin Dreams." Both titles are recommended for public libraries with music video collections, Carmen McRae Live especially so. (See THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT for availability.)
