Cat and dog lovers will surely devour these two NOVA programs (on one disc) devoted to popular domestic pets. The similarly structured titles contain voice-over narration, expert commentary, vintage stills, and contemporary footage documenting the origins, behaviors, and breeds of the respective animals. Cat Tales traces the lineage of cat-like animals back 25 million years with timelines depicting that cats started mingling with humans approximately 10,000 years ago. Visits to various institutions, including a natural history museum in Paris and interviews with scientists and other experts help viewers understand how cats initially were beneficial to humans for their ability to kill mice, rats, and snakes. While handling mummified cats, a professor in Egypt explains the importance of cats to ancient Egyptians who both worshipped and sacrificed the animals. Cats bred in Egypt eventually made their way to other countries through trade ships. Coming into modern times, the program visits cat shows where many of the 70 recognized cat breeds, ranging from furry to hairless, are on display. We also are transported to Atlanta to follow workers locating urban feral cats that are trapped, neutered, and released. Dog Tales takes a similar track to trace the origins of dogs that evolved from wild wolf creatures into modern lap animals currently found in 75 million U.S. households. A Belgian paleontologist displays wolf skulls and modern dog skulls, pointing out differences and similarities in shape and size. To seek answers on how wild animals became domesticated pets, the program travels to Russia where scientists work with foxes and dogs, studying behavioral and physical changes throughout generations. The reason we have so many dog breeds in differing sizes, coat types, and features is traced to a 'breeding craze' in Europe many years ago. Interviews with animal behaviorists, veterinarians, and other experts shed more light on dog breeds and adaptabilities. A groundbreaking program in a California prison where inmates help train dogs to become service animals is especially moving, especially when the camera captures affectionate interactions between canines and criminals. Depending on your choice of favored pet, choose one or both programs to learn more about the animals’ histories, behaviors, traits, and habits. Aud: H, C, A. Recommended. (S. Beauregard).
