This Animal Planet-aired five-episode series describes 29 breeds of domestic cat, from the common American shorthair to the Savannah, a half-wild variety banned in four states. Each segment covers the breed's origins, physical characteristics, grooming requirements, special needs (including possible health problems specific to the breed), and typical temperament. Along the way, heartwarming profiles of individual felines highlight their courage, heroism, and even therapeutic influence. One segment tells the story of a cat wandering through a factory in Wisconsin who was accidentally sealed in a shipping container and later found in France; another looks at a young boy with autism who surprises his mom by speaking eloquently and at length about his cats for an on-camera interview. For new owners, home cat-proofing, pet identification, feeding bowls, and vet care are briefly covered. Throughout, the furry creatures are shown being cute, cuddly, and adventuresome in studio and domestic settings, while experts offer helpful insights. Cat lovers will be very entertained by Cats 101, while potential pet owners will find the wide-ranging information here useful. Highly recommended. [Note: the companion title Dogs 101 is also newly available.] Aud: P. (M. Puffer-Rothenberg)
