Although both of these programs (which are best purchased as a set) are five years old, the information contained within is both exhaustive and general enough to be still useful. Dr. John Tyson is the host for this series of six programs (three per tape) which follow the course of birth from optimizing chances of conception to the body's healing process following birth--and all points in between. In Part 1, viewers are taken through the preliminary genetic and hereditary screening and physical exam, the importance of nutrition and exercise during the term of pregnancy, and the social and psychological side effects of becoming pregnant. Part 2 takes viewers into the hospital, discussing what to look for in choosing a hospital, showing different women in various stages of labor and regular and Caesarean deliveries, and the initial stages of post-natal care. Both programs feature graphic footage of all stages of the birthing experience, from performing an Ultrasound to delivery by Caesarean section. While this is liable to be disturbing to some viewers, those prospective mothers who want to see each and every procedure will be able to do so with these programs. A warning about the nature of the program appears at the beginning of each tape. In addition to the on location shooting, both programs feature segments with Dr. Tyson conducting a question and answer period with mothers and with expectant mothers on a wide variety of topics. These programs are excellent, and they go beyond many similar programs both in the depth of the coverage, and especially in the equal time given to the social and psychological aspects of pregnancy as well as the physical. Highly recommended. (See JFK: THE DAY THE NATION CRIED for availability.)
