Prepare for a shock, Barbie collectors: "Cissy" was the first "fashion doll" whose wardrobe imitated the haute couture of adult women. Launched in 1955 by Madame Alexander, Cissy was heralded with much fanfare. Not only did she dress differently, she was shaped differently, featuring what the script terms "tastefully molded bosoms." This video features a huge variety of Cissys and their clothes, all ready for the life of privilege shared by their young owners, as evidenced in the outfits designated for cotillion, tea parties, the yacht club, Junior League, and, of course, weddings--many, many wedding dresses. The collections on display are in a remarkable state of preservation, and enthusiasts will enjoy the myriad details about Cissy-spotting contained in the tape, including the differences between the "no-neck Cissy" and those with movable heads. Even though the script occasionally engenders snickers--i.e., "Cissy's secret armoire contains sumptuous champagne and blush creations of loungewear and undergarments"--this video will be welcomed by doll collectors.
