H.D. Motyl's fascinating documentary follows the journeys of four modern-day cowboys who each travel more than 2,000 miles during the two weeks before the Fourth of July—a period known as “Cowboy Christmas” due to the $3 million-plus in combined prize money available for winners during a time when 19 states host over 50 rodeos. Cowboy Christmas captures the mundane logistical aspects of moving horses, equipment, and support teams (for those lucky enough to have one) from one event to another, while also showing the white-knuckle drama of man versus animal in dusty arenas from Santa Fe, NM, to tiny Oakley, UT (friends of PETA will probably not like some of the footage showing competition activities). The men talk about the dangers and drawbacks of their chosen profession, including injuries and debt; but their passion is irrepressible, and the possibility of pay-dirt is clearly irresistible. Some use their travel time to play their last rodeo over and over again in their minds, hoping that good luck will supplant bad and that the next opportunity will lead to victory. Motyl doesn't romanticize his subjects but instead provides a well-rounded account of the ups and downs—literally and figuratively—of an iconic slice of American life. A festival award-winner, this is highly recommended. Editor's Choice. Aud: P. (C. Block)
