The story of Burt Pugach and Linda Riss would be unbelievable if it were fiction. In 1959, Pugach, a wealthy lawyer, became so obsessed with the beautiful young Riss that he hired thugs to deface her with acid when she dumped him. Incredibly, after serving time for the crime, Pugach blithely declared his continuing love and married the sad, disfigured Riss. Director Dan Klores' aptly-titled documentary Crazy Love combines archival news and talk show footage with abundant interviews—of journalist Jimmy Breslin, family members, friends, and—most fascinatingly—Burt and Linda themselves, successfully capturing the sheer weirdness of the tale without slipping into sleazy sensationalism. It's especially intriguing to watch Pugach steadfastly refusing to admit any wrongdoing, while the blind Riss comes across as simultaneously pathetic and combative. In an era of trashy tabloid journalism, Crazy Love turns a sordid story into a perversely fascinating romance between two people who are clearly damaged—both psychologically and physically. Recommended. [Note: DVD extras include audio commentary by director Dan Klores and subjects Burt and Linda Pugach, 43 minutes of deleted interview segments, text excerpts of Burt's prison letters to Linda, Linda's art gallery, and trailers. Bottom line: a fine extras package for an often fascinating documentary.] (F. Swietek)
