In this filmed-for-German-TV 1990 concert, Curtis Mayfield performs--in his signature sweetly falsetto voice--a string of hits, including “Superfly,” “It's Alright,” “Freddie's Dead,” “People Get Ready,” “Move On Up,” “Gypsy Woman,” and “We Gotta Have Peace.” (Later that same year Mayfield would be injured during a sound check accident on stage and be left paralyzed from the neck down for the rest of his life.) Held in high esteem by peers in the entertainment field, with tribute albums featuring contributors such as Eric Clapton and Bruce Springsteen, Mayfield masterfully captured the soulful blend of gospel and black funk first with the Impressions in the early ‘60s and later as a solo artist singing about civil rights and other social issues. Sadly, Curtis Mayfield passed away in December 1999. This vibrant and funky performance, which stands as a tribute to the man who ruled the airwaves with the sound of sweet soul music, is highly recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
