Don't let the sappy title fool you, because this is a refreshingly realistic look at ballet training which delivers the message that it's not necessary to be the best or be a pro to experience the joy and magic of dance. After an initial glamorous performance shot, the film flashes back and we learn that there's more to ballet than just the glitz: more work (and more reward). We follow the lives of Isis (10), Aya (14), and Maria (17), three girls from different backgrounds committed to dance--seeing how this commitment takes work and discipline, and how it effects family and social relationships. Throughout, constructive competition and healthy parental support are emphasized. The story comes to an end with Isis and Aya in performance, a segment that captures the thrill and excitement of performing in public, even at an amateur level. In addition, the tape includes a special message to parents and educators: the adolescent body is a work in progress. Strict dieting to meet some ideal form for the dance floor is dangerous if attempted before the dancer has reached full growth. It would be wonderful if all those caught up in the single-minded drive for perfection and cut-throat competition that prevails in children's' sports and dance were to watch this video. With its balanced, sane approach, the program provides a healthy and engaging view of what it means to truly enjoy dance. Highly recommended for most collections. (J. Reed)
