Before I popped in this tape, I'd never heard of Utah artist Pilar Pobil, but I must tell you that I'm a big fan now. After leaving her native Spain to become a wife and mother in America, Pobil decided at the age of 43 to begin her long-squelched career as a sculptor and painter. A class in pottery turned into self-taught journeys in sculpting in clay, and painting in oil and watercolor, eventually leading her to go for the artistic gold on her own terms. Her gorgeously colorful and quirkily exotic human figures are fresh and vibrant, and this tape does them wonderful justice. In addition to great photography and music, and an extended sequence of Pobil at work, we are treated to her views on what it means to be an artist who "started late," to be not-quite Spanish in America, and to have developed a career while raising a family. The somewhat murky sound keeps this tape from receiving a top-of-the-line rating, but it is, nonetheless, highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (K. Glaser)
