In 1975, a legend was born in the stormy waters of Lake Superior. The sinking of a giant cargo ship, the Edmund Fitzgerald, immediately unleashed a variety of theories as to what happened, and the controversy continues to this day. In-depth, but not truly visually stimulating, the program features interviews with ship disaster experts interspersed with both historical photos of the ship before the accident and graphic drawings of what might have occurred during her final moments. In 1995, divers placed a bell on the wreck as a memorial, and the inclusion of that event here marks the primary difference between this video and one released in 1993 by Southport entitled The Mystery of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Unless your library is located in a Great Lakes state or has an emphasis on maritime lore, this is an optional purchase for public libraries which own the earlier title--even considering the colossal wave of interest in sunken ships in the wake of Titanic's amazing success.
