There are few science fiction films with more of a profound impact on our culture than Star Wars. Characters like Han Solo, Princess Leia, Darth Vader, Chewbacca, R2D2, and more have dominated pop culture for decades. But what about some of the lesser-known characters? Elstree 1976 provides a spotlight on some of the franchise’s less notable players.
This title is a must-have for any university club looking to program a Star Wars film series. It would also appeal to filmmaking educators to show in their classrooms for film production majors.
The film’s title comes from a London neighborhood that served as one of the original film’s shooting locations. Director George Lucas cast various British actors for roles as X-Wing pilots, security guards, and various aliens that had less significant screen time in the film. Special attention is paid to David Prowse, the actor who portrayed Darth Vader. The film describes these lesser-known actors and goes into their scenes.
Greedo, the alien Han Solo blasts away, is given special attention. Actors whose scenes don’t even appear in the film are spoken to, and their memories from working on the then-unknown film are all explored. It is a fascinating look into a bunch of actors who unknowingly became part of a cult phenomenon. They may be minor players, but the fandom behind Star Wars is so immense that a documentary like this is warranted. This title would be perfect for May the 4th library programming. Aud, C, P.
