Everyone Can Work

People with developmental disabilities are perfectly capable of keeping jobs and being valuable, resourceful workers through the method of supported employment. With the help of a job coach, who acts as an advocate, and a willing employer, men and women with mental disabilities have found new self-esteem, respect, and fulfillment in life. Dr. Paul Wehman, an expert on rehabilitation medicine, hosts this video featuring five cases of successful supported employment (which places the person with a disability in a mainstream workplace). Although minor adaptations may have to be made (for example, shorter filing cabinets for wheelchair access), workers with developmental disabilities are shown to be quick, capable of handling detailed work, and extremely devoted to their job, whether it be mail sorting or greenhouse work. Parents and professionals will appreciate this introduction to the possibilities supported employment offers the developmentally disabled community. However, this video is more of a motivational "success story" compendium rather than an informative "how-to"-- at the end, one is excited about the system, but is left with no real resources or practical information for follow-up.
