Jurassic Park wouldn't have been able to stock any dinosaurs if not for fossils, the only record that the huge lizards ever existed. Fossils not only tell about past life, but also provide information on Earth's history that is helpful to scientists now. In this video, we see how fossils are created, ways they are excavated and prepared, and the steps involved in collecting data from them. The program also presents a basic history of life from an evolutionary point of view. Including information on how fossils are actually dated would have improved this otherwise comprehensive video, considering that the ages of items were often mentioned. On the plus side, the program does show students involved in paleontological activities throughout, thus making a potentially dry subject more relevant. The accompanying guide is rather basic, but this is a good addition to a natural history or geology unit. Recommended. Aud: I, J, H. (E. Gieschen)
